The Home Essentials: Basic tools

Sharing is caring!

In this new #HowToAdult series, I am gonna talk about the essentials you should have in your first home, whether it’s an actual house or an apartment. Now that you are not living with your parents anymore, you will need a few things to survive. Today, let’s talk about essential tools.

I mean, literally tools from the hardware store. You don’t need to learn everything about construction and the whole Building Code to fix things in your home. Trust me, I’m the less manual person you know when it comes to handywork. However, you need to do very basic work, such as installing a shelf, hooks or a frame.

The basic tools

I’m going back to the basics here. I won’t share, for now, what you should have in your toolbox when you own a house or any other property because you will need much more specific tools for specific jobs.

Even though I’m old and I have kids in elementary school, I still have to tell my parents they don’t need to install my shelves and frames. I can do it. I’m a strong and independent woman who doesn’t need anyone to do it for me. You can do it too.

First, get a toolbox

It doesn’t have to be a super large one with tons of compartments. This one is more than enough.

Here’s a list of essential tools you should have in your toolbox:

  • Screwdrivers
    • More specifically, you will need different shapes and sizes:
      • Square
      • Flathead
      • Phillips
  • A claw hammer
  • A level
  • A crescent wrench
  • A set of Allen wrenches
  • A small cordless drill
  • A measuring tape

Other tools and hardware you could need

These won’t necessarily fit in your toolbox:

  • Drywall screws
  • Screws
  • Pushpins
  • A bigger cordless drill
  • A stud finder
  • Plaster (in case you don’t have a stud finder like me and had to make multiple punch holes in the wall until you find a stud)
  • An Exacto knife

Install shelves like a pro

Now that you know what you need, I’m gonna leave you with a video showing you how to install shelves. Eventually, I’m gonna make the videos myself but for now, I still have camera-fright!

Great list! I have a bag and a tote that’s usually in my trunk with everything on this list + some, but I’ve also worked in the construction industry for the last 14 years! 😂

Yeah it’s a good reason to keep tools around!!!! I had to buy my first hammer a few weeks ago XD And I badly need a set of screwdrivers, I only have one with a Philips head -_-

I just had to take my vacuum apart….having a variety of screwdrivers is a lifesaver! Having some tools around the house is essential.
